8 Steps to Take if Your Child is Being Bullied

Is your child being bullied at school or over social media at home? This is a very serious matter, and it must be directly supported and solved by adults. Even if you have a teenager, you must step up and step in to protect your child. Kids can never solve a bullying issue alone!

Here are 8 tips to help:

  1. Care for your child’s needs. As your child may be physically or emotionally injured, you should contact your medical practitioner so that they can be evaluated and receive the appropriate care.

  2. If your child feels unsafe returning to school, allow them to stay home until the issue is fully resolved.

  3. Document the event, including names, dates, location and copy any social media messages. Print them out to make reporting the instances easier.

  4. Check your school’s anti-bullying policy.

  5. Report the incident, in confidence, to the teacher and principal and ask for a meeting.

  6. Monitor the school’s response. If you aren’t satisfied, ask the principal for another meeting. Document the meetings.

  7. Ask for a safety plan for your child and arrange for the school social worker and teacher to meet with your child before they return to school. Your child must feel safe.

  8. Make sure your school assures your child and you, that any retaliation will result in a more serious response.

Above all else, give your child time to open up and share what’s going on with you. They will want your reassurance that you believe them and that help for them is coming.
